Walker, Drygas endorse one-time energy relief payment to confront high prices

ANCHORAGE – Bill Walker and Heidi Drygas today endorsed the concept of making a one-time supplemental relief payment to Alaskans, as the highest oil prices in more than a decade are both boosting state revenue and making it hard for people to heat their homes.

The candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Governor thanked the leaders in the Legislature who introduced the proposal today, and released the following statements:

“Alaskans are getting hammered by high energy costs. Oil prices are higher than they’ve been in over a decade. The calculation is easy: get help out the door, just like the state did through the energy rebate program in response to high oil prices back in 2008.”

— Bill Walker, Candidate for Governor

“Working Alaskans and families need relief right now. Fuel prices in many communities have more than doubled, and we have the money to help without jeopardizing important programs and services. What’s good for Alaskans is simultaneously harming families, and people are struggling to pay high energy bills.”

— Heidi Drygas, Candidate for Lieutenant Governor
